How to chat with your Obsidian vault using AI

Upload your Obsidian markdown notes to MyMemory to search them by meaning, ask AI questions across the whole vault, and use them from Claude or Cursor.

Quick answer

In MyMemory choose Add memory → Integrations → Obsidian, then upload individual .md files or your whole vault folder. Each note becomes a memory titled after its filename, so you can ask AI questions across all your notes and get answers that cite the notes they came from.

Obsidian is excellent for writing and linking notes. Asking questions across hundreds of them is harder: search matches words, not ideas. Uploading your vault to MyMemory adds semantic search and AI chat on top of the notes you already have, without changing how you write in Obsidian.

Upload your vault

  1. Sign in at mymemory.dev and click Add memory.
  2. Open Integrations and choose Obsidian.
  3. Either select individual .md files or select your vault folder to upload every markdown file in it.

Each file becomes one memory, titled with the filename (without .md). The upload reports per-file status, so you can see if any note failed.

What gets imported

  • Included: the markdown text of each note, including frontmatter and [[wikilinks]] as plain text.
  • Not included: attachments such as images and PDFs, since only .md files are accepted. Upload important PDFs separately as their own memories.
  • Not synced: this is a one-time import. Edits you make in Obsidian afterwards are not picked up automatically; re-upload changed notes when you want them refreshed.

Questions worth asking your vault

  • "What have I concluded about pricing across my project notes?"
  • "Summarize my meeting notes that mention the Q3 launch."
  • "Which books did I note as recommended by more than one person?"

AI chat retrieves the most relevant notes with hybrid search (meaning plus exact keywords) and cites them, so every answer links back to the source note.

Use your notes inside Claude and Cursor

Once the vault is in MyMemory, the MyMemory MCP server lets Claude Desktop, Claude Code and Cursor call search_memories directly. Your notes become context for coding and writing sessions without copy-pasting.

Tips

  • Upload one project folder at a time into a dedicated space if you want AI chat scoped to that project.
  • Large vaults count against your plan's memory limit (1,000 on Free, 10,000 on Plus, unlimited on Pro).
