How to give Claude long-term memory with MCP
Connect Claude Desktop or Claude Code to MyMemory so Claude can search and save to a persistent memory that outlives any single conversation.

Quick answer
Copy the MCP config from Add memory → MCP in MyMemory, add it to Claude Desktop's claude_desktop_config.json (or run claude mcp add in Claude Code) with your MyMemory API key, and restart Claude. Claude can then search your saved knowledge and save new memories in any conversation.
Claude is very good inside a conversation and knows nothing about what you've read outside it. Connecting it to MyMemory changes that: Claude gets tools to search your saved articles, notes and bookmarks, and to save new things for later.
What you'll end up with
In any Claude Desktop or Claude Code conversation you can say things like:
- "Check my saved notes on our pricing experiments before answering."
- "Save this summary to my Research space."
- "What did I bookmark about Postgres indexing?"
Claude calls search_memories or save_memory on its own and uses the results in its reply.
Setup overview
You need Node.js 18 or newer and a MyMemory API key (create one in the dashboard; it starts with sm_). Your client downloads and runs the MCP server (@everstash/mcp on npm) for you, so there is nothing else to install. The fastest path is the setup wizard:
npx @everstash/mcp setup
It finds Claude Desktop and Claude Code (and other installed clients), asks for your API key, and writes the config itself. To do it by hand instead:
1. Get your config. In MyMemory, click Add memory and open the MCP tab. It has ready-made blocks for Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code and other MCP clients, each with a copy button.
2a. Claude Desktop: open Settings → Developer → Edit Config and paste the block, which looks like this:
{
"mcpServers": {
"everstash": {
"command": "npx",
"args": [
"-y",
"@everstash/mcp"
],
"env": {
"EVERSTASH_API_KEY": "sm_your_api_key_here"
}
}
}
}
Fully quit and reopen Claude Desktop.
2b. Claude Code: register it from the terminal:
claude mcp add everstash --scope user \
-e EVERSTASH_API_KEY=sm_your_api_key_here \
-- npx -y @everstash/mcp
2c. Claude on the web (claude.ai): if your plan supports custom connectors, add https://api.mymemory.dev/v1/mcp as a remote MCP connector instead, then sign in with your MyMemory account — no local install and no API key to copy.
The full walkthrough is on the Claude integration page.
Tips for useful memory
- Fill the library first. Claude's memory is only as good as what's in MyMemory. Import your bookmarks and saves before relying on it.
- Use spaces as context boundaries. Ask Claude to search a specific space (
list_spacesshows their IDs) so work questions stay out of personal notes. - Keep your key private. The API key grants access to your account. Never paste it into a chat or commit the config file.
Limitations
- The local server runs over stdio, so it works with Claude Desktop and Claude Code on the machine it's configured on; use the remote connector URL above for Claude on the web where custom connectors are supported.
- Deleting is two-step:
delete_memoryshows a preview and only deletes when called again withconfirm: true.
