How to search inside YouTube videos and podcasts you've saved

MyMemory turns saved YouTube videos into searchable transcripts with chapters, and transcribes podcast episodes with Whisper so you can search what was said.

Quick answer

Paste a YouTube link into MyMemory and it stores the video's transcript and chapters, so you can search for what was said rather than the title. Podcast episodes from Apple Podcasts links, RSS feeds or direct audio files are transcribed with Whisper, within a monthly audio-minute allowance that depends on your plan.

Video and audio are the hardest things to find again. You remember a guest saying something about hiring, but not which episode, and certainly not the timestamp. MyMemory stores the words, not just the link.

YouTube

Paste any YouTube URL into Add memory. MyMemory:

  1. reads the title, channel and thumbnail,
  2. fetches the video's captions (official captions when they exist, otherwise auto-generated ones) and stores them as the transcript,
  3. parses chapters from timestamps in the description (lines like 12:30 Hiring your first engineer).

If a video has no captions at all, MyMemory falls back to indexing the title and description, so the video is still findable, just not by its spoken content.

Importing in bulk: connect your YouTube account under Add memory → Integrations → YouTube Saved to import videos from your playlists instead of pasting them one by one.

Podcasts and audio

Podcast episodes don't come with captions, so MyMemory transcribes them with Whisper. Supported sources:

  • Apple Podcasts episode links,
  • RSS feed URLs (the latest episode is imported),
  • direct audio file links.

Spotify episode links are not supported, because Spotify's API does not provide the audio.

Transcription uses audio minutes from your plan:

Pro1,200

There is also a daily cap of 180 minutes for every plan.

Searching what was said

Once transcribed, an episode is searchable like any other memory. Hybrid search matches meaning and exact phrases, so both "advice about hiring early engineers" and a specific quote will find it. AI chat can then answer across many episodes, e.g. "What have different guests said about pricing?", and cite which videos or episodes each point came from.

Questions people ask

What if a YouTube video has no captions?

MyMemory indexes the video's title and description instead. The video is still searchable, but not by what is said in it.

Can MyMemory transcribe Spotify podcast episodes?

Not currently. Use the show's Apple Podcasts link or RSS feed instead; most podcasts publish both.
